"A joy, a depression, a meanness ...a crowd of sorrows ...The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing and invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond." — Jalaluddin Rumi
WORKING WITH EMOTIONS
Mainstream culture contains very little wisdom about how to work with emotions and the energies within them. As a result, many if not most of us lack the basic practical knowledge and inner capacities required to have a positive, productive and life affirming relationship with our own life energy when it shows up in the form of emotions.
With no knowledge to guide us, we often find emotions to be difficult and even sometimes destructive. Quite logically, we therefore do our best to minimize the negative effects of emotions in our lives by trying to minimize certain emotions within ourselves.
But the problem is not emotions. The problem is the lack of ability to work with the underlying energies.
It doesn't need to be this way. With some training, the energy underlying all emotions can be embraced and channeled to create a more fulfilling life. Whether you are most attracted to material success, emotional fulfillment, romantic intimacy, or spiritual awakening - with a little bit of knowledge and training (a) the wisdom contained in emotions and (b) the energy within them each become valuable resources on your journey.
One of the opportunities in our retreats is to learn to work with the energies within basic emotions such as anger, joy, shame, fear and sadness.
But to do this we must actually have these raw energies present to work with. So if you are feeling one or more of these emotions please make sure to bring all of them along! If everyone shows up empty handed - without any of these energies - then we won't have anything to practice with. And we won't be able to learn how to work with these energies. Please don't let this happen! Please bring all of yourself, especially including your unwanted emotions. And - if you so choose - we will explore together, curiously and lovingly, how to relate in a fresh new way with what is currently unwanted in you.
